Sundt Department Store
The department store Sundt ( Norwegian Sundt varemagasin ) is a listed department store in the Norwegian city of Bergen .
location
It is located in downtown Bergen, on the southeast corner of Torgallmenningen Square . Starvhusgaten runs north of the house .
Architecture and history
The house, considered an important work of Norwegian modernism , was built in 1938 by the architect Per Grieg . The department store company is much older and was founded in 1845. Today's building is characterized by objectivity with white plaster and glass. Above the glazed ground floor rise five upper floors dominated by horizontal plaster and glass bands. The plastered surfaces frame the area of the ribbon windows, which are placed in front of the facade. The shorter facades facing south and north are designed in a similar shape, but only have four storeys with ribbon windows. The main entrance is located in the northwest corner of the building. A vertically structured glass surface extending to the roof extends over this. The corner is also emphasized vertically by a white stele, 40 meters high above the house and the city, on which there is a statue representing Mercury .
