Kaveh or Kawe Ahangar ( Persian كاوه آهنگر Kawe Ahangar , DMG Kāve Āhangar , ' Kaveh the blacksmith ', also Kaweh , Kāveh or Kawa ) is a figure from Iranian mythology . It symbolizes the fight against tyranny and against oppression by foreign invaders.

According to legend, Kaveh is said to have led an uprising by the Iranians against the cruel prince Zahāk . The story of the uprising was written in the 10th century in the epic Shāhnāme by the Persian poet Firdausi . Kaveh used his blacksmith apron as the flag of the uprising.

Kaveh, the blacksmith on a postage stamp from the Persian Soviet Republic (1920) - he holds the hammer in one hand and the anachronistic red flag in the other

“The apron with which the feet are covered.
The blacksmiths, when they stretch the iron,
The Kaw put it on a lance tube,
Then the dust rose from the market;
He stepped, Lanz 'in hand, with a shout:
' You noble servants of God! '"

When he comes to Fereydūn , he adorns the apron with fabric woven from golden threads on which the jewels are sewn. This decorated leather apron was called Fereydūn Derafsche Kâviâni ( Kaveh's flag ). Later each new ruler added more precious fabrics, pearls and jewels. In the end, Kaveh's blacksmith's apron became the state flag of the Sassanid Empire . In the 7th century it was lost as spoils of war when the Sassanids were defeated by the Islamic Arabs .

Zahāk is seen as a symbol for the Assyrians . These ruled western Iran for a while. Their capital, Nineveh , was founded on August 10, 612 BC. Conquered by Medes and Babylonians and thus destroyed the Assyrian Empire forever.

The Mehrgan Festival is celebrated in October . The old Iranian festival in honor of the god Mitra also commemorates the coronation of Fereydūn after the victory over Zahāk and is therefore closely connected with Kaveh.

"On the lucky day, the first of the month of Mihr, he
sits on the head of the crown ornament.
Time was carefree with sorrow,
You all turned to godliness.
They emptied the heart of the war drink,
And made a new feast with feast.
...
He has set up the banquet
where one rests and lasts with wine.
That was left to us as a reminder,
Don't let worry and toil offend you. "

Kaveh enjoys great esteem among Persians , Kurds and other Iranian peoples.

In Iranian mythology, he is the father of Kai Kobad , Karen (Ghāren), a military leader of Manutschehr , and Keschwad, the father of Gudarz.

The Kaveh Ahangar statue, located in Afrin city center , was destroyed by Turkish troops and allied Syrian Arab militiamen on March 18, 2018, two days before the Nouruz festival, the Kurdish and Iranian New Year celebrations.

The magazine Kaveh was named after him.
