from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The caviar affair (also known as the asshole affair ) is an incident involving Michael Steiner , the then security policy advisor to German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .

On November 2, 2001, Steiner had insulted a German sergeant major and two other soldiers several times as " assholes " at Vnukowo Airport in Moscow . He also called to the soldiers that they would like to serve caviar . Steiner later stated that it was a joke. The defense attaché at the German embassy in Moscow reported the incident to Berlin . The flight readiness machine of the Federal Ministry of Defense had to make a long stopover in Moscow after the Chancellor's trip to Asia. In an interview with a newspaper, Steiner later stated that the long waiting time had drained everyone's nerves.

Despite an apology, Steiner was unable to keep his post as Schröder's foreign and security policy advisor. His successor was Dieter Kastrup .
