Kessler Tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Keßlerturm is a lookout tower in Bernburg (Saale) , Saxony-Anhalt .

The 26 m high tower is on Friedrichshang in the Krumbholz recreation area in the Bernburg valley town. The Parkeisenbahn Bernburg serves the Keßlerturm stop , from there it is a 150 m walk to the entrance.

In 1912 the entrepreneur Theodor Keßler (1839–1917) donated 12,000 marks to the city of Bernburg for the construction of a lookout tower. Keßler decided on the construction site and the design. Before that, a 20 m high wooden scaffolding was erected to test the view. The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1913 , the tower was built under the direction of city architect Georg Kalbfleisch and opened on October 16, 1913. At the end of the 1940s, the tower was in very poor condition due to vandalism, so it was first renovated in 1950. Further repairs were carried out in 1982/1983, 2003 and 2006, and since March 2007 the Bernburg community is responsible for the operation. The tower is open from March to October and can be climbed for a small fee. In 2012 there were 2200 visitors. From the viewing platform you can see the panorama of the city and the Saale valley, in good weather you can see the Brocken, 75 km away .

In the tower there is a plaque with a poem by F. Blachny:

Solidly made of ashlar stones,
you proudly
lift yourself out of the valley, dominant meadows, forests
and the busy course of the Saale

From the boat the boatman greets you,
from the forest peeps at the deer,
from the road the hiker waves
his greeting up to the hill.

In the shelter of your battlements
the tired bird seeks rest,
And the hall softly
mumbles the evening song to him.

Even in the latest aeons,
may you brave booze and storm,
German citizen diligence,
happy welcomed 'Kessler tower'.
