The Keşiş Gölü (Priest Lake ), also Turna Gölü is a reservoir 23 km east of Van in the Varak Dağı or Erek Daği , 2550  m high. The dam at the western end of the lake (Keşişgöl Kalesi) consists of two 7 m long stone walls 13 m apart. The space in between is filled with rubble. Some of the walls are still 5 m high. Another dam is located at the northern end of the lake (Rusa Barajı). The drains of the Keşiş Gölü are Derge Dere and Karamağara Dere.

history

It was laid out by a Urartian king Rusa to ensure the water supply to the capital Tušpa , a function that he still fulfills today. Its Urartean name was Lake Rusa ( m ru-sa-ai ṣu- [e] ). Waldemar Belck found a stele by Rusa at the lake , which tells of the construction of a dam and of irrigation systems. The stele is now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin .

A total of four Urartean inscriptions were found on the lake or in its vicinity:
