The Hagenholz waste incineration plant is a waste incineration plant with two lines in the Hagenholz area of Zurich's Saatlen district . It is one of two waste-to-energy plants from waste disposal + recycling and one of six waste incineration plants in the canton of Zurich .
The plant has an annual capacity of 245,000 tons and a thermal output for district heating of 84 MW and an electrical output of 17 MW. The Hagenholz waste-to-energy plant was modernized in 2010 for around CHF 235 million and again in 2014/2015. Together with the Aubrugg cogeneration plant , the system supplies most of the district heating network in the city of Zurich, which is 150 kilometers long and supplies around 80,000 apartments. According to WWF Zurich, it is "one of the most modern waste-to-energy plants in Europe".
In the spring of 2015, a referendum decided that the power plant should be expanded to include an additional metal recovery facility for CHF 38.9 million.
