The Kelchstein is a mushroom rock in the Zittau Mountains near Oybin in Saxony and is part of the Kelchsteine natural monument .
geology
The chalice consists of a chalk sandstone that is very poor in binding agents . It got its idiosyncratic mushroom shape from the effect of wind grinding and erosion on the different hard layers of sandstone.
Mountain sports
The Kelchstein is one of the most famous climbing peaks in the Zittau Mountains. The Kelchstein was climbed for the first time before 1785, when woodcutters put up a plaque that is no longer available on its summit. The actual climbing sport development began on September 3, 1911. Dresden climbers climbed the rock with the help of a tree on its northwest corner. The first flawless athletic ascent without artificial aids via today's Alte Weg by Siegfried Schreiber dates from June 26, 1946. The Kelch is the most difficult climbing peak in the Zittau Mountains to climb. To date there are only five routes with levels of difficulty VIIc and VIIIc.
