The Keller-Klub is an artist's cellar in the basement of the north-western part of the Darmstadt Palace . It has existed since 1952. Due to the overall renovation of Darmstadt Castle, the club was closed at the end of June 2015 until further notice. The interior has been completely removed in the meantime. The basement club has been open again since spring 2018 after the renovation.

history

The basement club was founded in the early 1950s by a number of Darmstadt artists in the "Saustall" in Arheilgen. These artists included a. Wilhelm Loth , Eberhard Schlotter , Helmut Lortz , Georg Hensel and Pit Ludwig . As early as 1952, they moved to Darmstadt's residential palace. The vaulted cellar in the Parforcehof was painted black and equipped with solid oak tables and chairs. The lighting was done with the help of candles. The place was therefore also called the place of the existentialists. Eberhard Schlotter captured the scenery in the artists' cellar in a large painting.

The basement club is a meeting place for artists, theater people, writers, musicians, architects and “other original spirits”. The basement club is organized as a registered association that uses the premises in the residential palace. Next to the restaurant there is a cellar gallery where small exhibitions are held. The first exhibition took place in 1961 with works by Horst Antes .
