Kemal Astare

Kemal Astare (* 1960 in Kaleçik , Turkey ) is a German writer of Zaza descent.

Astare has lived with his family in Germany since 1971, i.e. since his childhood. He works as a sworn interpreter, translator and language teacher for Turkish and Zazaisch . He is also a freelance writer, has published several books and, for example, regularly designed and moderated WDR radio broadcasts about the Zaza . In 1986 he took part in the writing competition »Leben in der Fremde« in Tübingen and won a prize.

Astare has published volumes of poetry in Zaza (partly in two languages) in Germany and Turkey. He also translated and edited folk tales from Kurdistan (1995) for the German-speaking area. Most recently, his volume of short stories was published, The Flowers of the Orient fragrant in the heart of the West (2009).
