Kemopetrol is a Finnish pop / rock band from Helsinki , named after the Czech ice hockey team Chemopetrol Litvinov .

The band members are singer Laura Närhi, drummer Teemu Nordman, guitarist Marko Soukka and keyboardist Kalle Koivisto, who also writes the songs for Kemopetrol. All lyrics are in English.

In addition to numerous appearances in Finland, the band has also played in Spain, Italy, France, Russia, England and Germany.

Band history

Marko Soukka and Kalle Koivisto founded Kemopetrol in November 1998 - originally as an ambient project. In December of the same year, Kalle Koivisto met Laura Närhi at a party. He later played her some songs that he had written. Then Laura joined the band in January 1999. She was followed in the same year by the drummer Teemu Nordman and the bassist Kari Myöhänen. The following July the band went into the studio.

Kemopetrol's first single Child Is My Name was released towards the end of 1999 and was a great success for the band and the newly founded indie label Plastinka and at the same time the breakthrough for the Finns.

In 2000, their debut album Slowed Down was released. The album contains a mix of rock and jazz elements combined with electronic music. In 2001 a 2-CD edition of the Slowed Down album was released . One of the two CDs is identical to the debut album, while the other CD contains remixes and live versions of the songs.

In March 2002 the single Saw It On TV was released, two months later the accompanying album Everything's Fine . In 2004 the single My Superstar and the album Play For Me came out. Since Kari Myöhänen had left the band the year before, Kemopetrol's producer Kalle Chydenius played the bass on these releases. Shortly after the release of Play For Me , Lauri Hämäläinen joined the band as the new permanent bassist.

The band's fourth album, Teleport , was released on March 29, 2006. It was preceded by the single Planet on March 8th. The latest album shows disco influences from the 80s, including the use of synthesizers from that time.

In 2008 Kemopetrol took part with the song En tahdo sinua enää in Finnish on the tribute album melkein vieraissa for Leevi and the Leavings .

Laura Närhi also sings solo. She contributed the song Se Ei Mee Pois to the soundtrack of the film Kuutamolla . She also lent her voice to Alimo & Control for the song Tarkkaillaan . Both songs, Se Ei Mee Pois and Tarkkaillaan , have Finnish lyrics. Her solo album Suuri sydän was released in August 2010.
