Kendrick Smith

Kendrick Michael Smith is an American cosmologist.

Smith received his PhD in physics from the University of Chicago in 2007 . Prior to that, he had completed his PhD in mathematics ( The Mod 2 Cohomology of Some Classifying Spaces of Compact Lie Groups ) at the University of Michigan with Igor Kriz in 2000 and worked in software development. As a post-doctoral student , he was at Cambridge University until 2009 and then at Princeton University until 2013 (Spitzer Fellow). From 2012 he was at the Perimeter Institute , which is affiliated with the University of Waterloo .

As a cosmologist, Smith combines theoretical astrophysics with data analysis of big data and software development. He was involved in WMAP and the measurements of the CMB with the Planck satellite and, more recently, with the radio telescope Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) in British Columbia (Okanagan Valley). With CHIME, Smith discovered a number of new Fast Radio Bursts (FRB). While around 25 FRBs were discovered in the first ten years since the first discovery (2007), CHIME succeeded in discovering 13 FRBs in just two months with the software developed by Smith and his team. In search of the millisecond bursts of FRBs, the terabytes of data that accumulate every second must be searched in real time.

He is known for data analysis of the CMB, among other things, to obtain information about the nature of the inflaton field , obtain information about cosmological inflation from polarization data of the CMB and the first discovery of gravitational lensing effects in the CMB and subsequent extraction of cosmological information from the gravitational lens distortions of the CMB.

For 2020 he received the New Horizons in Physics Prize .
