The ceramics museum, completed in 1982, shows the history of ceramics on approximately 2000 m² of exhibition space. One focus is the permanent collection of the salt-glazed stoneware produced in the Kannenbäckerland around Höhr-Grenzhausen.

Founded as a museum for contemporary and historical ceramics, the museum presents technical devices in special exhibition areas that document working with clay, model stoves and ceramics from handicrafts, design and art up to the current modern age.

Over four exhibition levels, the visitor is offered an overview of the historical development of ceramics, which ranges from the early salt-glazed Westerwald stoneware to magnificent Renaissance vessels and Art Nouveau vessels up to the 1990s. In addition, there is the work of contemporary ceramists. Special exhibitions show selected exhibits, collections and the works of artist groups, which are presented thematically or based on their current artistic statement.

Changing exhibitions by ceramists and glass artists , as well as the guest lecturers of the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass (IKKG) of the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, are partly presented at the same time in the Ceramic Museum Westerwald (KMW).

The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents itself as a forum for contemporary ceramic art through loans to international museums and through the announcement of the Westerwald Prize as an international competition. Furthermore, non-ceramic cultural events such as B. concerts, lectures or lectures take place in the KMW.

The Ceramic Museum Westerwald is a geographic information center of the National GeoPark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus .
