Mining museum of the Altenkirchen district
The mining museum of the Altenkirchen district was established in 1986 in the Herdorf district of Sassenroth . Inside the museum, an interactive map shows the locations of the various mines and huts in the region. An extensive mineral cabinet documents the geological formation of the Siegen layers . In addition, the history of mining in Siegerland is described in detail.
The actual mine is located below the entrance area. The working world of miners is presented here. In the outdoor area, a 15-meter-high headframe and some large devices from the Siemens-Martin steelworks at Charlottenhütte are on display.
The Sassenroth mining museum offers educational museum tours for school classes. Among other things, a “treasure hunt” is offered in the dump of an old mine in the neighboring forest .
The mining museum of the Altenkirchen district is the geo-information center of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark .
