Notch point

Notch point

Notch tips and leaf tips are the surface-retouched leading forms of the Middle Upper Palaeolithic in Western Europe , whereby the solutre tips are finer than in the Aurignacia . Notch tips are typologically the same as the leaf tips, but differ from them by the asymmetrical base, from which a strongly knocked out notch starts on one longitudinal edge. The Catalan type in Eastern Spain has a double-sided notch with a symmetrical central stem. Many cross-broken points with an existing base indicate that the notch points are to be interpreted as spear points. But it can also be used as a dagger , knife for smoothing arrow shafts or as a belt cutter.
