Boiler attendant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The boiler attendant is appointed by the operator of a steam boiler system to ensure safe operation.

The term boiler attendant goes back to 19th century police regulations . At that time - apart from the safety valve - there were no automatic monitoring or control devices on steam boilers . The monitoring of the water level, the feeding, the observation of the steam pressure and the stoking of the fire were manual activities. Since a dangerous condition was possible in the event of incorrect operation or carelessness, only boiler attendants who were reliable, had received special training and had undergone an examination by a state commission were allowed to be used. The function of boiler attendant was often combined with that of stoker .

In modern boiler systems with gas or light oil firing, the activity of the boiler attendant was reduced to checking and topping up operating materials, checking the water quality, visual inspections, checking safety devices mostly on the basis of a checklist and intervening in dangerous situations.

The tasks of the boiler attendant were contained in the steam boiler ordinance, which has since been withdrawn, as Section 26; these are:

The boiler attendant must be instructed

  1. to maintain the system and, if necessary, to supervise it,
  2. To report defects that are evident in the system and incidents according to Section 19 (1) to the persons appointed by the operator
  3. to shut down the system if defects in the system endanger employees or third parties.

The technical rules for steam boilers were withdrawn on December 31, 2012. The term boiler attendant is no longer used in the successor regulations, Technical Rules for Operational Safety (TRBS). With regard to the operation, the requirements of the Industrial Safety Ordinance for the preparation of a risk assessment , instruction of personnel and tests by qualified persons must now be implemented on a system-specific basis .
