Flowering tree of the cultivar 'Kesterter Schwarze'

The 'Kesterter Schwarze' is a local, early sweet cherry variety from Kestert on the upper Middle Rhine , also called 'Berzemichels' there, in Holzfeld (on the left bank of the Rhine) 'Alte Schwarze'. This variety was probably cultivated as a seedling in the first half of the 19th century .

Because of its high sugar content, 'Kesterter Schwarze' was also used for sweetening and burning in the past . It was praised as the 'table cherry of the very first order' (Wagner, 1928).

Trees of the 'Kesterter Schwarze' variety are very vigorous and form large, long-lived landscape trees with a huge, high crown with steeply rising leading branches. The cherry blossoms early. The flower is medium-sized, the petals are rounded and touching. 'Kesterter Black' is somewhat prone to shotgun , but otherwise robust. 'Kesterter Schwarze' produces small to medium-sized fruits with medium-firm “ meat ”. The fruit is ripe in the second to third cherry week . When fully ripe it is glossy black. The flesh of the rather small fruit is black-red, medium-firm, aromatic and very sweet with a lot of acidity and a slight bitter almond aroma. It dries on the tree. Fruits that fell low were previously collected and eaten like raisins.

Danger

The population of 'Kesterter Blacks' is endangered. Only one adult, relatively healthy specimen is known. At the end of the 50s and beginning of the 60s, the trees of the Kesterter blacks were slowly cleared, as the market prices were very declining and they were no longer in demand on the market (Rheinzeitung, Jan. 5, 1960). The Heimatverein Kestert 2015 e. V. tries to preserve this cherry variety within the framework of biodiversity . A new planting "Kirchköppel" was created from 2015 with numerous young trees - mostly as half-trunks, but also as bush trees (Gisela 5). In 2019 a larger row of trees followed, this time with traditional high trunks in Oberkestert.
