Chain tool

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chain tool is a tool that can be used to open and close bicycle chains without a chain lock. The name is misleading because there is no riveting ; the tools only push the chain pin in or out of the chain. There is only one tool on the market that really rivets chains ; This is the Rohloff revolver from the manufacturer Rohloff , with which circuit chains of the size 1/2 "× 3/32" are machined.

There are many different designs, including very small tools for repairs on the go ( multi-function tools ). Some high-quality models have a replaceable rivet pin, as this bends easily if improperly used.

If you are going to use a chain again later, it is advisable not to push the bolt all the way out, but to leave it in the outer link.

With unsuitable tools, assembly errors can easily occur, such as B. damage to the bolt seat in the tabs or insufficient bolt protrusion. This can break the chain.

In the past, circuit chains were always riveted because a few decades ago the manufacturing tolerances were still too great to just slide the pins in. To which was bike down on the bench and using a steel pad and punches and grains opened or closed.
