Surgical glove

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Surgical gloves are disposable gloves used in the medicine are used to the patient from contamination to protect the surgical wound or mucous membranes. They also offer the user protection against infections that can be transmitted through the patient's blood or other body secretions.

material

Surgical gloves are made of highly elastic, waterproof material. Due to its good mechanical properties, the natural latex used almost exclusively in the past is still used today . Alternatives for medical personnel who are allergic to latex are gloves made of synthetic isoprene rubber , which has the same mechanical properties as natural latex, or chloroprene rubber , which is, however, stiffer. Surgical gloves made of nitrile rubber or PVC are currently (2011) rarely used.

sterility

Only single-use products are used. For surgical or invasive diagnostic interventions, surgical gloves must be sterilized and permanently sterile packed. The sterilization is usually carried out using gamma radiation . In operations with an increased risk of damage to the gloves, two gloves are often worn on top of each other (so-called double gloving ). If it is only necessary to protect the staff during care measures, non-sterilized, hygienically packaged disposable gloves are used.
