Key signing before FOSDEM 2008

A key signing party is an event where users of PGP and comparable services meet to mutually sign their public keys .

This process is intended to establish a web of trust that is intended to confirm the assignment of the key to a person. The person is confirmed via official documents (e.g. identity card , passport or driver's license ).

For security reasons, it is not usual to enter the confirmed key directly because it cannot be ensured that a computer used for this purpose has not been compromised by malware or that the user input (especially the passphrase ) is read by simply "looking over your shoulder" can be.

Such meetings are particularly widespread at universities, but key signing parties are also held as part of trade fairs and lectures. Such an event at the c't stand at the Cebit computer fair has a certain tradition .

The event form CryptoParty , which has emerged since 2012 , takes up the tradition of the key signing party and expands it in terms of content to include further encryption and data protection technologies.
