The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences (KGUMSB) was founded in 2013 as the second university in Bhutan and serves to train medical professionals. In addition to the training of nursing staff, there is a focus on the further training of already licensed doctors and traditional medicine .

history

The education system in Bhutan did not open to Western influences until the 1960s. Traditional medicine still plays an essential role in the country's primary health care. In 2012, with the University of Medical Sciences Act of Bhutan (UMSB) , the government decided, in addition to the Royal University of Bhutan , which was founded in 2003 and which unites all other disciplines, to found a university specifically dedicated to the urgently needed training of medical professionals, such as nurses and doctors, should dedicate. The University of Medicine, founded in Thimphu in 2013 , was renamed Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences (KGUMSB) in 2015 in honor of the ruling Druk Gyalpo . However, the program has teething problems. For example, due to a lack of staff (as of November 2019), the originally intended Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree cannot be awarded.

Faculties

The KGUMSB has three faculties:

  • Faculty of Traditional Medicine (FoTM) with 27 employees and 90 students.
  • Faculty of Health Sciences (FNPH) with 132 employees and 430 students.
  • Faculty for Postgraduates (FoPGM) with 22 employees as well as 63 participating doctors and 31 students.

The focus of training within the Faculty of Health Sciences is on nursing. There is also a faculty of traditional medicine and a post-graduate school that awards the MD after four years .

Other facilities

KGUMSB is editor of the peer-reviewed Bhutan Health Journal , which has been published twice a year since 2015.

The KGUMSB also maintains a Medical Education Center for Research Innovation and Training (MECRIT). The director is Neyzang Wangmo.
