The Kienberg is a 720 m high mountain on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest , which rises between the Thuringian community Luisenthal and the city of Ohrdruf in the district of Gotha . The Kienberg is an old mining area, numerous legends attest to the search for silver and copper ore. The mountain was already used for forestry in the Middle Ages, for this purpose coal piles were built on the slopes of the mountain as well as tar ovens. The reforestation of the forests used by clear-cutting management is difficult because of the steep slopes.
