The Kieseritzky Gambit is an opening variation in chess . In the system of ECO codes , the Gambit is classified under the key C39. It is named after the Baltic German chess player Lionel Kieseritzky .
The Kieseritzky Gambit results from the King's Gambit , more precisely from the King's Jumper Gambit , after the moves:
- 1. e2 – e4 e7 – e5
- 2. f2-f4 e5xf4
- 3. Ng1-f3 g7-g5
- 4. h2-h4 g5-g4
- 5. Nf3 – e5 (as an alternative to 5. Nf3 – g5, the Allgaier gambit )
Continuing the Kieseritzky gambit with 5.… Ng8 – f6 6. Bf1 – c4 d7 – d5 (6.… Qe7 !?) 7. e4xd5 Bf8 – d6 8. 0–0 Bd6xe5, the result is the Rice gambit. It is named after the American entrepreneur Isaac Rice , who paid top players to study this variant and offered cash prizes in themed tournaments. Nowadays it is hardly ever played in tournament practice because it is considered incorrect. 8. d2 – d4 with tangles like 8.… Nf6 – h5 9. Nb1 – c3 Qd8 – e7 10. Nc3 – e4 f7 – f5 11. Ne4 – g5 Nb8 – d7 12. Qd1 – d3 is quite playable.
In Boris Spasski - Bobby Fischer , Mar del Plata 1960, it happened 5.… Ng8 – f6 6. d2 – d4 d7 – d6 7. Ne5 – d3 Nf6xe4 8. Bc1xf4 Bf8 – g7. Then 9. c2 – c3 is a suggestion from Fischer.
