John Shaw (born October 16, 1968 in Irvine ) is a Scottish chess master.
Life
Shaw had his first major success in 1991 when he won the Aberdeen Open . He has been one of the top Scottish chess players since the mid-1990s. He won the Scottish Championship three times (1995, 1998 and 2000). In 1998 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , in 2006 he became Grand Master in Gibraltar in 2003, at the 2004 Chess Olympiad in Calvià and in the Four Nations Chess League in 2005/06 after completing the standards . In the same year Shaw shared second place in Tórshavn .
John Shaw has published several books on opening theory .
Team chess
National team
In 1994 , 1996 and 2000 to 2014 he took part in ten Chess Olympiads with Scotland . He represented his home country four times (1992, 2001, 2003 and 2005) at the European Team Championships , including two events (2001 and 2003) on the top board.
Club chess
In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Shaw played in the 1996/97 season for Northumbria , in the 2000/01 season for Poisened Pawns , in the 2003/04 season for Slough , from 2004 to 2009 for Guildford A&DC , with whom he won the 4NCL in 2007 and 2008 . In the 2010/11 season he played for White Rose Chess , since 2013 he has played for Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher . In the Danish Skakligaen he played in the 2010/11 season for Skakklubben Sydøstfyn .
