Jonathan Rowson (born April 18, 1977 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish chess player . As the third Scot after Paul Motwani and Colin McNab , he has held the title of Grand Master since 1999 .

Chess career

Rowson achieved considerable success in chess as a teenager, despite the health impairment caused by diabetes mellitus diagnosed at the age of six .

He won the silver medal at the European U18 (1995) and U20 (1997) championships. 1999, 2001 and 2004 he was Scottish national champion. In 2002 he shared first place at the World Open in Philadelphia . In 2004 he won the traditional tournament in Hastings and the championship of Great Britain . He successfully defended this title in 2005 and 2006.

In 1996 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 and 2008 he played at the Chess Olympiads for the Scottish national team. In the German Federal Chess League he played for the Solingen SG 1868 from 2000 to 2002 . In the British team championship 4NCL he played in the 1996/97 season for Northumbria , from 1997 to 1999 for the Midland Monarchs or Bigwood (the club was renamed in 1998), from 1999 to 2009 for Guildford A&DC (where he in the 2002/03 season was not used), from 2009 to 2011 for Pride and Prejudice and since 2011 for Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher . Rowson won the 4NCL in 1998 , 2004 , 2007 , 2008 , 2011 and 2012 . In the Dutch master class , Jonathan Rowson played for Schaakstad Apeldoorn in the 2000/01 season . In the French Top 16 , Rowson played in the 2004/05 season at Reims Echec et Mat , in the 2005/06 season at Echiqiuer Nanceien and in the 2007/08 season at AJE Noyon . In the Belgian interclubs he played in the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 each a competition for Koninklijke Gentse Schaakkring Ruy Lopez .

Academic career

In addition to his chess activities, Rowson studied PPE at Oxford and Harvard Universities . He completed his master's degree and began working on his dissertation at Bristol University in 2005. He now works as director of the Social Brain Center of the Royal Society of Arts .

Rowson is a well-known chess trainer and author. In addition to numerous articles, he has published three chess books :

In the more recent books he deals primarily with thought processes and psychological factors in chess. In 2019 he published the book The moves that matter: a chess grandmaster on the game of life ( ISBN 978-1-5266-0386-9 ).

He also writes the Rowson's Reviews column in New In Chess magazine , in which he reviews chess books .
