Paul Motwani
Paul Anthony Motwani (born June 13, 1962 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish chess player and writer of Scottish-Indian origin.
Life
He learned chess at the age of 11. Paul Motwani grew up in Dundee and studied mathematics and physics at the University of Dundee from 1980 to 1984 . He wrote articles for Scottish Chess magazine, among others . He wrote a weekly column for The Scotsman newspaper . Motwani has lived in Belgium since 1995.
successes
In 1978 he became World Cadet Champion (U16) in Terneuzen-Sas van Gent . He has won the Scottish Individual Championship seven times: 1978 in Edinburgh , 1986 in Troon ( South Ayrshire ), 1987 in Hamilton (South Lanarkshire) , 1992 in Troon, 1993 in St Andrews (together with Colin McNab ), 2002 in Stirling and 2003 in Edinburgh (shared with Ketewan Arachamia-Grant ). At an IM tournament in 1996 in Timrå , Sweden , he finished second behind Holger Grund, ahead of Erik Malmstig and Heikki Westerinen .
He has been a chess grandmaster since 1992 . He was the first Scot to receive this title. His current Elo rating is 2440 (as of October 2019), which puts him in third place in the Scottish Elo ranking behind Matthew Turner and Jacob Aagaard . His highest rating to date was 2552 in July 2004.
National team
With the Scottish national team, he took part in nine chess Olympiads between 1986 and 2004 , only skipping the 1998 Olympics because of the birth of his son, with a total of 58 points from 95 games (+33 = 50 −12).
Chess clubs
He used to play club chess in Belgium for SC Boey Temse , in the 2013/14 season for Chess Club Anderlecht and in the 2017/18 season for the Koninklijke Brugse Schaakkring , in the Netherlands for HWP Sas van Gent . He has also played in the Scottish and French (for the Club de Reims Echec et Mat ) team championship .
