A geological natural monument is located in the Detmold district of Hiddesen under the name Kiesgrube Kater .

Nearby is the courtyard, formerly known as the Katerhof , after which the Katerallee in Hiddesen was named, as well as the Kater gravel pit , where gravel was extracted for road construction until 1964. Parts of the pit were placed under monument protection in 1974 because a glacial cut that is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia can be seen there. In the lower part of the roughly 20 meter deep pit, mammoth bones have been found that were transported there 400,000 years ago together with melt waters and gravel. The solidified rock was ground smooth by ice about 200,000 years ago and thus formed the characteristic glacier cut.

The Glacier Grind local recreation trail leads along the natural monument.
