The Kiev Passage ( Ukrainian Пасаж Київ / Passasch Kyjiw ; Russian Пассаж Киев / Passasch Kijew ) is a building complex in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

The passage forms a small, narrow street between Khreshchatyk No. 15 and Wulyzja Sankowezkoji and is one of the cosiest and most romantic places in the center of Kiev.

Look into the street

The passage, built in the years 1913/1914 in Art Nouveau style with elements of neoclassicism , became a center of cultural life. It has many cafes, restaurants and a cluster of upscale boutiques and shops on the ground floor of the buildings. There are apartments and flats on the upper floors. Near the entrance of the passage is the Avenue of the Stars , on which famous Ukrainians from culture and sport are immortalized on 17 stars.

history

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries there was a 1 hectare estate on the site, which was acquired by the insurance company "Russia" for 1.5 million rubles in order to create a large shopping center with shops and offices on the ground floor and apartments in the build upper floors. The architect Pawel Andrejew (Russian: Павел Сергеевич Андреев ) was commissioned to implement the project . Construction began in 1913 on Wulyzja Sankowezkoji . From there they worked their way towards Khreshchatyk. After a year around two thirds of the planned building complex was completed, but due to the First World War , the October Revolution and the subsequent turmoil, the work was stopped and the street remained unfinished. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War , a large part of the passage was destroyed in autumn 1941. After the war it was decided to reconstruct the building, so between 1948 and 1950 the facades were restored and a 6-storey building with a large archway was built at the beginning of the passage. In 2004, the Kiev city administration planned to restore the passage, where residents fought against themselves, fearing that the passage would be increased under the guise of renovating the facade.
