The Kiev Central Post Office ( Ukrainian Київський Головпоштамт / Kyjiwskyj Holowposchtamt ; Russian Киевский Главпочтамт / Kijewski Glawpotschtamt ) is in the early 1950s in the style of socialist classicism built building in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

location

The building, which also houses a postal museum , is located at Khreshchatyk number 22, on the corner of Majdan Nezalezhnosti .

history

The first stone building of the Khreshchatyk stood in place of today's main post office from 1797. It was a large two-story brick building with two wings and belonged to Onufrij Holovynskyj. The municipal post office moved there in 1849 and the Grand Hotel , which was destroyed in 1941, was later built here . It had 110 rooms, an excellent restaurant, room telephone and all the other advantages of the time. The suites cost 30 rubles a day.

The post office building was the first major renovation project in downtown Kiev after World War II . A clock above the main entrance of the building, which is preceded by a columned arcade, shows the times of some of the world's cities. On August 2, 1989, the arcade of columns collapsed and killed eleven people who were in the square. Since this tragedy was one of several at this point, it led to speculation about a supernatural cause. In the early 1990s the arcade was rebuilt.

On February 19, 2014 the building was occupied for a few days by Euromaidan activists .
