Kikin Palace

The Kikin Palace ( Russian Кикины палаты ) is a small palace in Saint Petersburg , built in the Petrine Baroque style .

The palace belonged to a colleague of Peter the Great, Alexander Kikin , who was the first head of the Petersburg Admiralty . The structure was built between 1714 and 1720 near the Smolny Institute (then a tar factory). After Kikin had helped Tsarevich Alexei to escape in 1718 and was subsequently arrested and executed, the palace became state property.

From 1719 to 1727 it housed the collection of the Kunstkammer and the personal library of Peter the Great. After a renovation, the chancellery, the hospital and the church of the cavalry regiment of the life guards were housed here from 1733. In 1829 the palace was rebuilt, the original baroque decor was lost.

The Kikin Palace was badly damaged during the Leningrad blockade . Between 1952 and 1956 it was rebuilt by Irina Nikolajewna Benua according to the presumed original appearance. Today the building houses a music college.
