The Japanese saw (also: Japanese saw Japanese nokogiri ) is a hand saw and the Japanese counterpart to the widespread in Europe miter saw or handsaw . In contrast to these saws, a Nokogiri works exclusively on pull.

While saws that act on pressure require a relatively wide and rigid blade and can still bend, the pulling principle of Japanese saws enables a thinner saw blade (0.3–0.6 mm, with carpenter's saws also up to approx. 1 mm), which is very fine Cuts with little effort allowed. Because of this property, this type of saw is also increasing in popularity outside of Japan. Types of saws

  • The Dōzuki ( 胴 付 き (鋸) , Dōzuki (noko) , "saw with trunk") is a one-sided toothed back saw. It is mainly used for precise cuts, similar to the European precision saw .
  • The kataba ( 片 歯 , "one-sided teeth") is a one-sided toothed saw without a back. This is used for large and deep cuts, also in carpentry .
  • The Kobiki ( 木 挽 , "wood saw") is used to cut boards or as a non-set version with the narrower back for tree care and fruit tree pruning .
  • The Kugihiki ( (木) 釘 挽 , (Ki) kugihiki , "(wood) nail saw") is used for flush sawing z. B. of dowels. The teeth are not set so that the saw can be laid flat on the material from which the dowel is protruding.
  • The Ryōba ( 両 歯 , "double teeth") is a saw with teeth on both sides. One side with triangular teeth is used exclusively for longitudinal cuts, the other with trapezoidal teeth for cross or bevel cuts in the wood.

The saw blade is traditionally forged from one piece with the tang, more modern saws often have exchangeable blades that are fixed in the handle with a screw. The rod-shaped, wooden handle is about 20-30 cm long with an oval cross-section. It is wrapped in To ( rattan cane ) along its entire length . But there are also models in which the saw blades are clamped with a special clamping device. No tensioning screw is required for these models.

There may be disadvantages for inexperienced or inattentive users. The often very thin saw blades can easily kink if the saw is poorly guided. Since these saws remove comparatively little material and produce a narrow cut, the cutting direction (usually by tilting the saw) is more difficult to correct.

Tooth types

Trapezoidal teeth
Preferred for cuts across the grain. The teeth with alternating bevels and three cutting bevels each separate the wood fibers razor-sharp and leave very clean surfaces.
Triangular teeth
For cuts along the grain. The tooth pitch varies along the length in order to facilitate the cutting and improve the effect.
Universal toothing
A hybrid of the named types of teeth, for cuts across, lengthways and diagonally to the grain.
