Kilkee ( Irish : Cill Chaoi ) is a lively coastal town on the Atlantic during the holiday season and is located directly on the N67 national road in County Clare in the west of the Republic of Ireland . Kilkee is one of the main holiday resorts in Ireland and has 1024 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Kilkee is first mentioned in the 14th century as Cill Chaoidhe (St. Caois Church). Kilkee Castle was built as a feudal building by the MacSweeneys in the late 15th century and was later used by the O'Briens.

As well as some modern touches, the place retains some of the Victorian buildings from the 19th century. The more than one kilometer long Horseshoe Bay (dt. " Horseshoe Bay " - the official name is Moore Bay - round like the rest of an impact crater) is protected by the Duggerna Reef from the Atlantic - therefore the beach is suitable for bathing for all ages. Kilkee regularly receives the Blue Flag award from the European Commission , i. H. an award for particularly clean water. In addition to bathing on the beach, the Pollock Holes (naturally formed rock pools on the western edge of the city, which are supplied with new water with every high tide) or the New Found Out (a springboard 13 meters above the Atlantic) can be used for refreshment . There are also the caves Byrnes Cove and Paradise Cove . Two kilometers from the coast lies the rocky island of Bishop's Island .

Kilkee is a good starting point for trips on the peninsula to Loop Head . The road to Loop Head leads along a rocky coast with numerous cliffs, the Cliffs of Doneen. The cliffs reach a height of up to 80 meters and form impressive rock formations.

The town was once one of two terminal stops on the narrow-gauge West Clare Railway from Ennis - the other was the neighboring town of Kilrush .

Sports

Kilkee is a hotbed for divers . The diving and water sports center is extensively equipped and is a point of contact for both beginners and experts. Dives can be done at depths of 10 meters up to 45 meters. The diverse marine life attracts divers from all over the world.

There is an 18-hole golf course near Kilkee . From the first and second tee you look directly over the Atlantic, and from the third tee over Chimney Bay .
