Killeshin ( Irish Cill Uisean , "Church of the [valley of the river] Uise") is a small village in County Laois overlooking the valley of the Barrow River . It is 3 miles from the town of Carlow on the R430 regional road .

History and sights

A first early Christian monastery was probably founded here towards the end of the 5th century. It was destroyed at the end of the 11th century.

A church was built in the 12th century, parts of which are still preserved today. The entrance consists of one of the best-preserved arches in the Irish- Romanesque architectural style. In 1703 a 32 m high round tower belonging to the church was demolished because the landowner feared that he might fall over and fall on his cattle.

Across the street is an 8 m high moth built by the Normans in the 12th or 13th century .
