Kilronan Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chill Rónáin , formerly Castle Tenison ) is a large country house in the middle of 16 hectares of parkland about 2 km from the village of Ballyfarnon in County Roscommon, Ireland . The house on the banks of Lough Meelagh was built around 1820 and then expanded significantly in the 1880s. The newer part is an irregularly shaped two-story building with a baron tower adjoining the older building. Today Kilronan Castle is a wellness hotel .

history

At the end of the 17th century, the entire property, which would later be called Castle Tenison , belonged to the Dundas family . They sold it in 1715 to Richard Tenison of the Tenison family in England ; he was the son of the then Bishop of Meath and MP for Dunleer . He died in 1726, leaving the property to his son, William Tenison , who was Lieutenant Colonel of the 35th Infantry Regiment in 1746 and also MP for Dunleer. William Tenison died in 1748 with no heirs. The property fell to his uncle Thomas Tenison and then to his son, Thomas Tenison Jr. This was 1763 High Sheriff of Leitrim and 1776–1783 Member of Parliament for County Monaghan . The property, now called "Kilronan Castle", fell to the only son of Thomas Tenison Jr., another Thomas Tenison , who was High Sheriff of Roscommon in 1791 , High Sheriff of Leitrim in 1792 and also in 1792 a Member of Parliament for Boyle .

Whose son, Edward King-Tenison , was Sheriff of Leitrim 1845 , 1847-1852 MP for Leitrim and 1856-1878 Lord Lieutenant of Roscommon. After his death in 1878, the property fell to his son-in-law Henry King , who had changed his name to King-Tenison and inherited the title of Earl of Kingston from his brother . In the 1880s, he had the country house extended to its present form by adding a neo-Gothic extension to the old house. Most of the surrounding land was sold during his tenure.

After his death in 1896 the country house was no longer inhabited; the 9th Earl of Kingston preferred to live elsewhere and in 1939 the furnishings of the house were auctioned. Later a division of the construction crew resided there, who built a road into the Arigna Mountains . Eventually the Land Commission acquired the property and later sold the country house to Michael and Brendan Layden . In 2006 the Hanly Group converted Kilronan Castle into a luxury hotel.
