Kilwa Masoko is a port city on the Indian Ocean in Tanzania with 12,324 inhabitants (2002 census).

history

The town emerged from a fishing village after World War II when the British colonial administration decided to relocate the administrative seat of Kilwa District from Kilwa Kivinje here. Therefore the city got its name from Kiswahili "Kilwa with the market".

present

Kilwa Masoko has a daily market that is important for the entire district. The largest fishing port between Dar es Salaam and Lindi is located here . The place has a certain tourist importance as a starting point for tours to the ruined city of Kilwa Kisiwani on the offshore island.
