description

Rear view of the villa

The simple two-storey factory owner's villa was built in 1911 for the entrepreneur Friedrich Beckmannshagen , who ran the belt factory opposite. The parent company of Beckmannshagen, the Bergisches Fachwerkhaus Beyeröhde 9 , still exists today and, like the band factory, is a listed building.

The west side of the building is designed with three axes, with the middle axis protruding as a trapezoidal risalit on both floors . Above this porch is a gable with a mansard roof in the expanded gable roof . The two axes on the side of the risalit are provided with simple window openings with four-winged windows, which are provided with small-piece braced skylights . The weakly profiled stucco work corresponds to the architectural style of the functional on the ground floor and the floral Art Nouveau on the upper floors. The house is accessed via a single flight of stairs on the south side.

When Beckmannshagen died, the villa was bequeathed to his older son, the factory to the younger son. On September 12, 1996 the villa was listed as a historical monument. In 2002 a real estate agent bought the house from a family member who uses the first floor and the attic for his company after renovation. In 2009 the children's museum was extensively renovated.

Use (1986-2015)

Musical instruments made by children at an exhibition in the Federal Ministry for Youth, Family, Women and Health in Bonn, 1987

Since the spring of 1986, the privately operated children's museum, Schaufenster Schule & Kinderkunst , has been located on the ground floor of the villa . It was the first museum of its kind in Germany and the only one that presented art by and for children, with around a hundred exhibits, although the target audience is not just limited to children. The art teacher Margret Beckmannshagen is the initiator of the project. The museum was run by the sponsoring association of the same name, “Kindermuseum-Schaufenster Schule & Kinderkunst eV”. The exhibits on display include a variety of original sound instruments.

International postcard painting competitions were also held annually. Around 70,000 postcard images from 71 countries have come together over time. Around 1000 pictures are presented in the annually changing exhibition. Courses for children in pottery, painting and making music were also offered. The museum had limited opening times.

In July 2020, the end of the museum was announced for financial reasons.
