Child protection center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A child protection center is a non-governmental point of contact for children, families and youth welfare employees in stressful life situations and threats to the child's well-being through various forms of violence and neglect . In addition to advice in crisis situations, child protection centers also offer programs for violence prevention and therapeutic assistance. Individual centers also have residential groups for minors and are thus involved in taking into care procedures . The bundling of corresponding child protection services in centers, each of which is organized in a national federal association, exists in Germany and Austria . There are also individual child protection centers in Switzerland.

history

The first German child protection center was founded in 1976 by a group around Reinhard Wolff in Berlin. It emerged from a project by the Free University of Berlin with the aim of creating an alternative to the contemporary handling of domestic violence that is oriented towards intervention, punishment and separation . Families should be better protected from danger through early help for children and parents and through the recognition of developmental conditions such as structural violence . In the years and decades that followed, child protection centers were opened in 28 locations in Germany. There are currently 41 child protection centers in Austria.

organization

The child protection centers are sponsored by various organizations. In Germany, in addition to the German Child Protection Association (13 centers), these include the Arbeiterwohlfahrt , Diakonie , Caritas , the German Red Cross , children's clinics and individual foundations and associations. They are organized in the Federal Working Group of Child Protection Centers based in Cologne . Individual centers are financed through donations and individual contributions, for example from foundations, as well as remuneration for services provided on behalf of youth welfare . The Federal Association of Austrian Child Protection Centers is based in Vienna .
