The Kings County Hospital Center is a hospital founded in 1833 in Brooklyn , New York City . The hospital's doctors developed the world's first dialysis machine and conducted the first studies of HIV infections in women. In addition, the first magnetic resonance imaging images of humans were taken here . The hospital has 627 beds. In 2007 it was visited by 539,894 patients and 2,423 births were carried out. 116,689 people were treated in the emergency room.

The hospital treats many uninsured people in the Brooklyn area . The US Army trains soldiers from reserve units at this hospital to prepare them for treatment of injuries sustained in armed conflict prior to deployment in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

On June 19, 2008, the 49-year-old African American Esmin Green died here after waiting 24 hours in a waiting room . This incident, recorded by a surveillance camera, attracted worldwide attention.
