The Kingston-Port Ewen Suspension Bridge (also Roundout Creek Bridge , Old Bridge or Wurts Street Bridge ) is a two-lane road bridge that leads Wurts Street from Kingston , NY, over Rondout Creek to Port Ewen on the south bank.
The suspension bridge , which is 349 m long, has a span of 215 m and crosses Roundout Creek at a height of 26 m. The bridge is now limited to 5 tons (around 4.5 t), the main traffic load is carried by a modern, four-lane reinforced concrete bridge around 200 m downstream. Both bridges cross Roundout Creek just before it flows into the Hudson River .
Construction of the bridge, planned by Holton D. Robinson and John A. Roebling's Sons Company, began in 1916, but was interrupted until 1920 due to local political and financial problems as well as material shortages as a result of the USA entering the war. After the resumption of work, in which David B. Steinman was involved as an assistant engineer , it took about a year until the bridge was opened on November 2, 1921. This became the first north-south highway in New York State along the Hudson Rivers completed.
