Kingston is a city in Ulster County in the Hudson River Valley in the state of New York , United States . At the 2010 census , the city had 23,893 inhabitants.
history
Kingston was founded in 1651 by predominantly Dutch settlers under the name Esopus and renamed Wiltwijck a little later . In 1664 it came into British possession. When the British colonies broke away from the motherland in the American War of Independence in 1775, what was now Kingston became the capital of the State of New York . A little later Kingston was occupied by British troops and burned down on October 13th. In 1786, five years after the war ended, the colony joined the United States. Albany became the capital of New York State in 1797 instead of the destroyed Kingston.
geography
Kingston is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, north of the mouth of the Rondout Creek , which gave its name to one of the two villages that were then Kingston. The Esopus Creek flows north past Kingston and forms the boundary of the City of Kingston to the Town of Kingston in the northwest .
The Interstate 87 cuts through the city to the west for a few hundred meters. There are also several New York State Routes that run through Kingston. The northern terminus of New York State Route 213 is at the intersection of Fair Street ( New York State Route 32 ) and Henry State. NY 32, which also runs in a north-south direction, intersects a little further north with New York State Route 28, which runs here . This is shown as an arterial road to the west as Interstate 587, to the east NY 28 leads as Broadway to its eastern end on US Highway 9W (Frank Koenig Boulevard), which runs through the east of the city from south to north and is parallel to the one on the US Highway 9 runs along the east bank of the Hudson River .
There are several parks within the urban area, the largest of which is Hasbrook Park in the east. To the southeast of this park is the smaller Kingston Point Park, south of the city center stretches between NY 32 and NY 213. Forsyth Park is west of Washington Avenue in the west of the city.
National Register of Historic Places
In the City of Kingston is the Stockade District with the Kirkland Hotel . Both have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2002 . Within Kinston there are other properties listed in the National Register, such as the Ulster Performing Arts Center on Broadway, the Sharp Burial Ground on New York State Route 32 , the homes of James and Mary Forsyth , John Smith , George J. Smith , Benjamin Ten Broeck and Jacob Ten Broeck or the house at 184 Albany Avenue and the Kingston – Port Ewen Suspension Bridge .
Demographics
The 23,456 residents of Kingston, found in the 2000 census, lived in 9,871 households; including 5,498 families. The population density was 1,232 per km². 10,637 residential units were recorded in the village. Of the population, 80.38% were White, 12.77% African American, 0.30% American Indian, 1.53% Asian, and 1.90% from other races; 3.12% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.
Of the 9,871 households, 27.0% had children under the age of 18; 35.2% were married couples living together. 36.8% of the households were single households. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 3.02.
The population was distributed among 23.9% under 18 years of age, 8.1% from 18 to 24 years of age, 28.9% from 25 to 44 years of age, 21.9% from 45 to 64 years of age and 17.1% from 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.
The median household income was $ 31,594 and the median family income was $ 41,806. The per capita income for Kingston was $ 18,662. 15.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
