Joseph Walter Estabrook (born May 19, 1944 in Kingston , New York , † February 4, 2012 in Houston , Texas ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the US military ordinariate .

Life

Joseph Estabrook studied at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, and the Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley . He was ordained priestly on May 30, 1969 by Bishop Edwin Bernard Broderick at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Albany, New York. After pastoral work in Albany , he was director of the Diocesan Family Life Bureau from 1970 to 1977 .

On July 4, 1977, he became a military chaplain in the United States Navy . He worked at the Jacksonville Marine Hospital (1977/78), at Naval Station Mayport (1978/80), and at Marine Corps Base Quantico (1980/82). After completing postgraduate studies at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, he worked for the Navy Chief of Chaplains Office from 1983 to 1986 . From 1986 to 1988 he was chaplain on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) , a nuclear powered aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class with 3200 crew and 2480 aircraft personnel. After a brief service at the Oakland Marine Hospital , he studied ethics at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University from 1988 to 1989 . He then served on the Sigonella military airfield in Sicily (1989/91) and completed an officer course at the aval education and training command in Newport , Rhode Island (1991/94). From 1994 to 1997, Estabrook served in the administrative service of the Navy Chief of Chaplains . He was also an ethics advisor to Navy Surgeon General and DOD for the Health Affairs Ethics Panel . In 1997 he was appointed Command Chaplain to the United States Pacific Command in Pearl Harbor and was Fleet Chaplain of the Pacific Fleet until 2000 . In 2003/04 he served on Marine Corps Base Hawaii .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Flenucleta and auxiliary bishop in the US military ordinariate on May 7, 2004 . The US military archbishop Edwin Frederick O'Brien donated him and Richard Brendan Higgins, who was appointed auxiliary bishop with him , episcopal ordination on July 3, 2004 ; Co- consecrators were Howard James Hubbard , Bishop of Albany , and William Keith Weigand , Bishop of Sacramento .

On June 17, 2004, he resigned as a military chaplain with the rank of captain . He has received multiple awards with the Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2) and the Legion of Merit (3). He was appointed papal honorary prelate by Pope John Paul II . He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem (KC * HS).
