history

The second name Požarevačka crkva goes back to the Serbian town of Požarevac , from which many immigrant Serbs came. The neighborhood around the church was also known as Požarevačka Mahala. The Bučina pond is located next to the church.

The church was built next to an old wooden church from 1690, also consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel, from 1759 to 1763. On October 27, 1763, the church was consecrated by the then Bishop Dionisije (Novaković). The steeple on the west facade of the church was built in 1794, the year is above the entrance portal of the west facade.

Iconostasis

The iconostasis is considered an excellent work of Serbian art in the 18th century. It is older than the church itself as it was first installed in the old Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of the Assumption in Szentendre in 1742. The iconostasis reflects a unique influence of the Wallachian painting school from Moldova on Serbian art.
