Eparch
Eparch ( Greek ἔπαρχος - eparchos ) was a superior and commander, especially the governor of a province .
The eparchy was the dignity of a eparchen and also the assigned administrative district. In its earlier period the Byzantine Empire was divided into 64 eparchies, of which statistical overviews have been preserved:
- Synekdemos of Hierocles , probably from the time of Emperor Justinian I.
- Georgios Cyprius (around 600 AD)
The Kingdom of Greece owned 59 eparches until 1886 , which were then abolished, with the exception of a brief reintroduction from May 1891 to July 1892 .
The office is also known from Byzantine influenced states like Makuria (medieval state in Sudan ). The Nobatia Eparch played an important role there.
