Hierocles (grammarian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hierocles ( ancient Greek Ἱεροκλῆς ; Latin Hierocles Grammaticus ) was a Byzantine grammarian and geographer of the 6th century. He is considered to be the author of the Synekdemos (Old Greek Συνέκδημος; Latin Synecdemus ), a list of the 64 eparchies of the Byzantine Empire and 923 cities under Justinian I before 535 AD. Nothing more is known of the person of Hierocles.
