history

The Church of the Holy Trinity is located in the historical part of Moscow, where the village of Golenishchevo was located in the 14th century. This village served the metropolitan Alexi as a resort; Metropolitan Kiprian spent the last years of his life here until his death in 1406. He had the first wooden church for three hierarchs built here. After his death, the village remained a metropolitan residence. In 1474 Metropolitan Geronti had a new wooden church built for the apostle John . This became dilapidated at the beginning of the 17th century and was replaced by a new wooden church dedicated to the Trinity, which was first mentioned in 1627. Since then, the village has been called Troitskoye-Golenishchewo ( Troiza means Trinity ).

In 1644 the construction of a stone tent roof church of the Holy Trinity began. The architect Antip Konstantinow from Nizhny Novgorod was also the architect of the Terem Palace and was considered a specialist in tent roof construction. The builder was Larion Ushakov. The church was consecrated in 1646. In 1812, during the French invasion, the church burned down. After the war it was restored and consecrated again in 1815. In 1860 a new bell tower was built. It was restored again at the beginning of the 20th century.

Under Soviet rule in 1937, the last abbot of the Church, Alexander Orlov, was arrested, shot in Butowo in 1937 and buried there in an unknown grave. The church was closed for services in June 1935 and used by various organizations as a club, storage room, music library and factory.

Bells and a valuable iconostasis were lost. In 1991 the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
