The route begins in the Hull district of Gatineau, the sister city of the Canadian capital Ottawa north of the Ottawa River , and heads north, it serves as a bypass around Gatineau. As far as Lachute , the route runs eastward in the valley of the Ottawa River. Passing Thurso and Lachute, the autoroute then opens up to Montréal Airport, the Aéroport International Montréal-Mirabel . It then crosses Autoroute 15 northeast of the airport and ends at Route 117 .
