Figures of thumb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since 1941, the publication “ Faust numbers” has been one of the standard works for production-related, economic and entrepreneurial data for agriculture and horticulture in German-speaking countries. Since 2005 they have been published by the Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft eV (KTBL) in cooperation with YARA GmbH & Co. KG .

content

The book offers guidelines for important agricultural production methods . The target group of the figures of thumb are practitioners, trainees and students, as well as consultants and employees in the upstream and downstream industries. The book serves as a reference work .

According to the publisher, a rule of thumb is a rough estimate. It is reduced to essential aspects and should be applicable to many situations. In any case, it should be a memorable and credible guide value, because it is supported by expert knowledge. It therefore corresponds more to an empirical value than a statistically secured date. A rule of thumb can be expressed both quantitatively and qualitatively.

The focus of the thumbs-up for agriculture is on production technology in crop production and animal husbandry . The crop closes the open field vegetable growing , the fruit production , the viticulture and the production of renewable energy and renewable raw materials with a. Statistical and business data as well as information on the environment, product processing and direct marketing round off the offer.

In 2015 the figures of thumb for organic farming appeared for the first time . They provide an insight into the special conditions of organic farming , especially into its cost and performance structures, but also into its ability to deal with challenges, e.g. B. the nutrient supply or the weed pressure.

The biogas rule of thumb has been available since 2013 . They map the entire process of biogas generation and utilization. The technology and functionality of biogas plants and their components are explained as well as u. a. the logistics of substrate provision or the processes for digestate processing. The different options for heat recovery are also considered from a technical and economic point of view. Using model plants, the profitability of agricultural biogas plants is considered and the ecological effects of biogas production and use are shown.

history

The first edition of the thumbnails was published by the German Ammonia Sales Association (DAVV) as an in-house book to promote the sale of mineral fertilizers . The DAVV wanted to use the data to simplify the work for their advice centers and technical staff when looking after the farms. In the foreword to the 1st edition, the special character of the format is already emphasized: “These Fausztahlen are (...) are not to be regarded as fixed numbers, but only as reference points for the quick assessment of a company and as an aid to advice. They are reminders (...). "

The circle of addressees was then expanded with the 2nd edition in 1948. Since then, the book has also been aimed at career counseling and practice. Personal copies were also given to customers by the employees of the company, which was renamed Kohlwertstoff-AG after the war . The publisher was the German ammonia sales (DAV) - part of the Kohlenwertstoff-AG .

The attempt to establish its own series on horticulture was discontinued after the first edition of the numbers for horticulture in 1963. From 1978 horticulture was merged with agriculture in the figures of thumb for agriculture and horticulture .

Since 2005, a contract between the Board of Trustees for Technology and Construction in Agriculture (KTBL ) and YARA GmbH & Co. KG, as legal successor to DAVV, has regulated joint publishing. Since then, the KTBL has also published the special formats for organic farming and biogas as a single editor .
