The dam Futaleufú or Dam General San Martín ( Spanish Represa Futaleufú or Represa General San Martín ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of Chubut , Argentina . It dams the Río Futaleufú to a reservoir (Spanish Embalse Amutui Quimey ). The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the Futaleufú hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico Futaleufú ). The village of Trevelin is about 10 km east of the dam. The Los Alerces National Park is located north of the dam.

The dam is used to generate electricity. It was built to the aluminum plant of Aluar Aluminio Argentina SAIC in Puerto Madryn to be supplied with electricity. Construction of the dam began in 1971. It was completed in 1978. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Estado Nacional ). The concession for the operation was transferred to Hidroeléctrica Futaleufú SA on June 15, 1995.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a rubble dam with a height of 120 m above the river bed . The crest of the dam is at a height of 500 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 600 m, its width 10 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 3.1 (or 6) million m³.

The dam has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . A maximum of 2880 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge, and a maximum of 355 m³ / s via the bottom outlet.

Reservoir

The normal storage destination is between 472 and 492.5 m. With a storage target of 492.5 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 88.1 km² and holds 5.378 (or 5.7 or 6.8) billion m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 495 m, the minimum 465 m.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is located about 3 km downstream of the dam on the right bank of the river. The installed capacity is 448 (or 472 or 516) MW . The average annual generation is given as 2.56 (or 2.613, 2.737 or 2.9) billion  kWh . The power plant went into operation on April 18, 1978.

The four Francis turbines have a maximum output of 112 (or 118) MW each; According to other information, two turbines have an output of 118 MW each and the other two 140 MW each. The nominal speed of the turbines is 230.8 min −1 . The fall height is between 121.5 and 157 m. The flow rate is 90 m³ / s (maximum 105, minimum 35 m³ / s).

Others

The main shareholders of Hidroeléctrica Futaleufú SA are Aluar Aluminio Argentina SAIC (60.2%) and the province of Chubut (33.51%).
