Church of Saint Pandeleimon (Thessaloniki)
The Church of Saint Panteleimon in Thessaloniki ( Greek Ναός του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα Naos tou Agiou Pandeleimona ) is a Byzantine church from the 14th century. Located in the eastern part of the city center near the rotunda on the corner of Iasonídou and Arrianoú streets north of Egnatiou street, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1988 ( early Christian and Byzantine buildings in Thessaloniki ).
history
The church, which was probably built at the beginning of the 14th century, could be the former Theotókos Períblebtos Church. In 1548 it was converted into a mosque ( İshakiye Camii ). The building was damaged in the 1978 earthquake.
construction
The church is a cross- domed church with a chancel area, a domed narthex and a three-sided gallery ending in two chapels in the east, of which only the chapels have been preserved. The main dome has an eight-sided tambour. The choir apse with a triplet window is closed on five sides.
Furnishing
Only a few of the original frescoes have survived, including the representation of the Mother of God (in the prosthesis to the left of the choir). Important saints are represented in the Diakonikon.
