The Church of Pelarne ( Swedish Pelarne kyrka ) is one of the oldest wooden churches in Sweden . It is located in the municipality of Vimmerby in the province of Kalmar and belongs to the Diocese of Linköping . As the parish church of the parish of Pelarne, it is currently the oldest wooden church in Sweden still used for church services.

Church building

Free-standing bell tower

The oldest part of Pelarne Church, the eastern choir wall, is believed to date from the early 13th century. The church was built entirely from lying pine , which was connected with the help of dovetail grooves ( Swedish laxnutar ). The current clapboard cladding is from the 18th century. The geostete nave ends on the east side in a narrower and lower and lower choir. A stone sacristy was added to the north side in 1812. On the southern side of the choir is an octagonal crypt chapel, also made of stone, belonging to the Ramsvärd family. A church tower, which no longer exists today, once rose above the west side of the main nave. Instead there is a free-standing bell tower from the late 17th century outside the cemetery wall. It is also made entirely of wood and houses three bells, the smallest of which dates from the 13th century.

The altar on the east wall of the choir was built in 1786 by Jonas Berggren from Målilla. The altarpiece, on the other hand, was installed in 1900 and shows the dying Christ on the cross, surrounded by a crucifixion group . Several medieval wooden sculptures are also noteworthy. The triumphal crucifix on the southern long side was probably made between 1250 and 1300. The depiction of the coronation of Mary on the north wall of the nave is dated to the end of the 15th century.

In the south side chapel hangs a banner for Hans Ramsvärd, a colonel in the Swedish cavalry in the Thirty Years War , who died in 1688.

Astrid Lindgren's relationship with the Pelarne Church

Portrait of Pastor Karl Joel Blomqvist. Pelarne Church

In 1905, Samuel August Ericsson and Hanna Jonsson, Astrid Lindgren's parents, were married in the church . They were married by the then pastor of Pelarne, Karl Joel Blomqvist. During her childhood, Astrid Lindgren often visited her grandmother Louvisa Jonsson, who was living in Pelarnehult at the time. It cannot be ruled out that the writer met the pastor, who worked until 1916, in her childhood. There is no evidence that she named her fictional character Kalle Blomquist ( Swedish Kalle Blomkvist ) after this pastor.
