Virgilienberg church ruins

The church ruin Virgilienberg is located on a hill in the south of the city of Friesach between the Teutonic Order Church and the Heiligenblut Church . It was formerly the fortified complex of a provost house with a church.

history

Since the patron saint of the church was Saint Virgil , it cannot have been consecrated before his canonization in 1233. 1240 is named as its first provost Hartwig. In the second half of the 13th century the vice cathedral office came into the hands of the provosts. The provost's office owned a library of European standing.

In 1309 the provost's office was first destroyed by flames. The existing walls come from the reconstruction of the church. In 1606 the provost's office was closed. After another fire in 1752, only the church choir was covered in 1754. In 1786 the church was profaned . The final decline of the church began after the last fire in 1816. Although the securing of the church ruins had begun in 1894, the triumphal arch collapsed in 1926.

Remains of the ruin

In addition to the sparse remains of the Propsteig building in the south of the church, only the walls of the former three-bay choir with a 5/8 end remain. The walls are supported by two tiered buttresses . The two and three-part tracery windows are still relatively well preserved. Round services that once supported the vault are still present above figurative and ornamental consoles .
